Summary

Today, we find ourselves in a challenging moment for the church and for the world, as we grapple with forces — growing economic inequality, rising anti-immigrant sentiment, artificial intelligence — that make the work of Catholic Charities both harder and more necessary.

It is our hope that the resources within might increase your understanding of yourself and your agency as part of the broader Catholic community — locally, nationally, and globally — and bolster your commitment to doing the work we are so urgently called to do, the work of Matthew 25: to feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, and to welcome the stranger. Then, truly, we can say we are living up to our mission and ideals to be Catholic in charity and identity.

The 2nd edition of Catholic in Charity & in Identity: Resources to Enhance the Legacy helps Catholic Charities agencies integrate their Catholic identity into daily operations and services. It covers the Church’s worldview, culture, practices, and the agency’s organization as an ecclesial ministry (including a checklist for the agency). Other sections give concrete suggestions and content emphasizing Catholic identity: essays, PowerPoints, retreats and prayers for onboarding employees and renewing staff, board members, and volunteers.
