ALEXANDRIA, VA – Leaders of Catholic Charities agencies from around the country traveled to Washington, D.C., in late May to advocate for the needs of those most in need in their local communities. Across more than 60 meetings with members of Congress, congressional staff members, and administration officials, the members of the Catholic Charities network discussed a variety of critical issues, from affordable housing and homelessness to food insecurity and disaster preparedness.

In addition to many individual and small group meetings, five members of Congress — Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), Rep. Mike Lawler (R-NY), Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA) — addressed all the Catholic Charities leaders during their two days in Washington, which were hosted and facilitated by the Government Relations team at Catholic Charities USA. Steve Messeh, the director of the Center for Faith at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, also met with the full group.

The advocacy meetings coincided with the People of Hope Museum’s visit to Washington. Housed in a digitally outfitted semi-truck, the People of Hope Museum features 42 original, authentic video stories told by Catholic Charities staff and volunteers from agencies around the country. In these brief, powerful videos, the storytellers share moving first-person accounts of what it means to serve someone in need in their darkest moment. The traveling museum will visit more than 150 communities during its three-year tour of the country.
