Today’s Supreme Court decisions on humanitarian protections for migrants already in the United States and the rights of asylum seekers at the border stand as a stark reminder that our country’s immigration system remains broken, convoluted and in dire need of common-sense, bipartisan reforms. Legal immigration pathways should exist for families and individuals fleeing oppression, natural disasters, extreme poverty, religious discrimination and other conditions that for 250 years have compelled vulnerable people from across the world to seek safety and a better future for their families in the United States.

For decades, Congress and presidential administrations of both parties have failed to come together to clarify and open these pathways. Their repeated and collective inability to enact meaningful and pragmatic reforms has resulted in unnecessary family separations, heightened anxiety and uncertainty for families seeking refuge, dysfunction in American border communities, and a backlogged, chaotic legal system. The human suffering resulting from this cannot be overstated.

As we celebrate our nation’s 250th anniversary, Catholic Charities USA once again calls on Congress and the administration to live up to our founding principles by creating legal immigration pathways for our brothers and sisters around the globe yearning for the promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Fixing our broken immigration system will require good-faith compromise, a feature of American government that must not be allowed to become a relic of our past. Until such compromise is forged, the Catholic Charities network remains committed to answering the Gospel call to provide critical humanitarian aid to people in need who arrive at our doorstep.
