CCUSA implores House to protect SNAP and Medicaid

July 1, 2025

After the Senate passed H.R.1. on Tuesday, July 1, Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) released the following statement:

For months, as Congress has worked on its budget proposals, leaders from across the Catholic Charities network have met individually with members of both parties to advocate for the needs of vulnerable people. In these meetings, we have pointed to the real, tangible and tragic ways that millions of families and individuals across the country would suffer due to proposed cuts to SNAP and Medicaid. We are grateful to the many members of Congress and their staff who have received us generously and listened intently, but we remain deeply concerned about the bill that passed the Senate today.

In a new letter to Speaker Mike Johnson, CCUSA President and CEO Kerry Alys Robinson called on all members of the House to consider these families while negotiating the final version of this budget proposal. She wrote, “I implore you and members of your caucus to consider the moral implications of your decisions. I ask that you prioritize the common good over partisan interests.”

As currently written, this measure will harm millions of Americans. As has been the case for 115 years, the Catholic Charities network is committed to helping our brothers and sisters in their moments of need.
