In reaction to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in favor of Catholic Charities Bureau of the Diocese of Superior in their appeal of a decision by the Wisconsin Labor and Industry Review Commission, Catholic Charities CEO and President Kerry Alys Robinson issued the following statement:
At Catholic Charities agencies across the United States, staff and volunteers provide merciful, life-giving services each day to those most in need in their communities, resulting in more than 15 million people each year receiving food, housing, mental and physical health care, and more crucial support in their hours of need. These ministries are informed, inspired and, in fact, mandated by the Gospel and our Catholic faith. As detailed in our amicus brief in this case, Catholic teaching also expressly prohibits proselytizing while performing charitable works as articulated clearly by Pope Benedict XVI in his 2005 encyclical Deus Caritas Est. At Catholic Charities, we don’t serve people in need because they are Catholic, and we don’t try to convert them; we serve our neighbors because we are Catholic, and we respect their faith traditions. We applaud the Supreme Court for recognizing these vital ministries as religious activities and for upholding the religious liberty of Catholic Charities Bureau of the Diocese of Superior in this case.
