Woman escapes domestic abuse with help of Catholic Charities

August 26, 2015

After a living a life surrounded by drugs, prostitution, and crime, Vera* knew she wanted a better life for her children. Catholic Charities helped her make that dream a reality.

After dropping out of school to care for her three kids, Vera had to leave an abusive relationship — while she was pregnant and afraid she would have nowhere to go.

Her sister found the number for Catholic Charities and called on her behalf — the Center had room for her and her children, and they gratefully took the safe place to call home they offered. Her baby daughter was born a few weeks later.

Her children are able to grow up in a safe environment away from the dangers of the streets, and they love the new school they attend. For her part, Vera appreciates the chance to continue her education and looks forward to obtaining a job in the near future.

Vera is so grateful for the support and care Catholic Charities offered her at a vulnerable time of her life – “I’m so thankful they believed in me,” says Vera. “They taught me my value and what I can accomplish.”
