Local students make hurricane relief donation to CCUSA

November 20, 2017

On Monday, Nov. 20, 2017, Sister Donna Markham OP, PhD, president and CEO of Catholic Charities USA, received a check for $1,500 from students of the Blessed Sacrament School in Alexandria, Va. The students met Sister Donna at CCUSA’s office, also in Alexandria. The donation was the fruit of a student-run initiative called “Hope after Hurricanes,” which the students created in order to aid victims of recent hurricanes. The executive director of Caritas Puerto Rico, Padre Enrique Camacho, and the principal of Blessed Sacrament, Valerie Garcia, were also present. Padre Enrique spoke to the students about the difficult realities that school-aged children are contending with right now as a result of the damage caused to Puerto Rico by Hurricanes Irma and Maria, both of which struck the island in September.
