Ensuring no parent has to watch their child go hungry

August 24, 2015

Watching your children go without food is one of the hardest experiences any parent could think of. Thankfully, Sam* no longer has to face that reality.

A single dad with five children under the age of 13, Sam lost his job when he couldn’t find affordable child care, and was on the verge of losing his apartment. Every spare cent he made went to pay for the rent, leaving the shelves bare when it came time to feed five growing kids.

Catholic Charities quickly helped Sam sign up for a family self-sufficiency program which helped enroll his children in Medicaid to cover their health needs and determined that his family met the eligibility to receive supplemental nutrition assistance. Having reliable access to affordable and nutritious food made a huge difference in the quality of life for Sam and his family.

After meeting their basic needs, their counselor helped Sam apply for short-term financial assistance while applying for full-time jobs, leading to Sam regaining employment within months.

For Sam and his family, hunger is a thing of the past, and they look forward to keeping it that way.
