Getting balanced through budgeting classes

August 25, 2017

James is a husband, and he and his wife have three young children. He works in an industry that, like many, fails to provide workers’ compensation to cover the most basic expenses. According to OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) “Changes in state-based workers’ compensation insurance programs have made it increasingly difficult for injured workers to receive the full benefits to which they are entitled.”

James, sadly, was injured in an accident at his job and it left him hospitalized, unable to work, and ultimately, unable to pay rent or buy groceries for his family.

He told us with tears in his eyes, “It was hard to keep food on the table for our children, paying rent each month was a struggle,”. He met with our Financial Stability team who counseled, educated, and provided emergency financial assistance.

It’s because of support from the community that Catholic Charities of Central Texas is able to offer assistance to families like James’. The family successfully completed budgeting classes and now has funds set aside for emergencies. James has recovered from his final surgery and is eager to return to work!
