The redemptive power of a paycheck

April 20, 2026

Ricky’s story is one of redemption and success. Now 51, he arrived at Christopher Place Employment Academy, a program of Catholic Charities of Baltimore, on July 17, 2025. From the start, he maintained a stellar attitude, despite many obstacles. But he remained humble and was determined to reach his goals and not go back to prison, which he entered at only 19 years old.

Ricky successfully completed the academy phase of the program and the capstone on December 17, just five months after he began. Then it was a matter of finding gainful employment.

He interviewed with the Hyatt hotel and was hired as a house attendant, starting in February. Ricky was so happy and told the staff at Christopher Place that this job marked the first time he had ever been compensated with a meaningful wage. His previous employment experiment was inside the federal correctional system.

When Ricky received his first paycheck, he was overjoyed and asked the Christopher Place staff to take a picture of him holding the check. It’s been a few months, and he continues to find joy in his job. More than that, Ricky pays his good fortune forward by assisting other men currently in the Employment Academy, encouraging them to stay focused.

Ricky exhibits outstanding leadership qualities and remains upbeat and positive. He truly serves as a model to men facing circumstances similar to his own.
