Ronald Gering to receive 2016 Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Award

Alexandria, Va. (July 12, 2016) — The recipient of the 2016 Bishop Joseph M. Sullivan Award is Ronald Gering, Service Area Director for Children and Family Services, Catholic Charities Diocese of Trenton. The Bishop Sullivan award is given by Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA) to recognize a staff person working at a Catholic Charities agency who has distinguished himself/herself in the field of helping children, youth and families. The award will be presented to Mr. Gering at an awards breakfast during CCUSA’s Annual Gathering, which will take place in Boston, Mass. this October.

Bishop Joseph Michael Sullivan (deceased) served as Auxiliary Bishop of the Diocese of Brooklyn and was revered nationwide for his concern for the poor and marginalized.  In 1961 he was appointed Assistant Director of Catholic Charities’ Childcare Division.  Four years later he was named the Director.  In 1968 Bishop Sullivan became Executive Director of Catholic Charities and was elected Executive Vice-President of the Board of Trustees of Catholic Charities in 1979.  Throughout his ministry he championed the needs of children.

Mr. Gering joined Catholic Charities in 1975 as a Program Director for the Family Growth Program, which focused on keeping homes safe for children through innovative training and family systems therapy. Through the years, Mr. Gering has held increasingly responsible positions that included Program Director, Clinical Director for Child Services, and Division Director.

Presently, as the Service Area Director, Mr. Gering manages 20 programs meeting the critical needs of the most vulnerable children and families in Central New Jersey. These programs cover the four counties of the Diocese of Trenton and have a total budget of $10 million. Mr. Gering has provided strong clinical and administrative leadership throughout his tenure and has overseen significant growth services, impacting the lives of thousands of children and families.

Mr. Gering is highly respected by his peers and recognized throughout New Jersey for his work with children.  He was selected as the 2011 recipient of the Outstanding Professional Award by the Mercer County Commission on Abused, Neglected, and Missing Children and the Cherish the Children Foundation.
