Catholic Charities USA (CCUSA), one of the nation’s largest networks of social service providers, stands ready to support its agencies in their efforts to provide relief to individuals affected by hurricanes and flood-related events.

Catholic Charities agencies are entrenched in communities for the life of the community, helping individuals and families navigate their every day emergencies. When a community is impacted by a disaster, those every day needs expand from taking care of individuals to taking care of the needs of an entire community.

“The people served by Catholic Charities agencies are some of the most vulnerable members of the community,” said Maria Vorel, Senior Vice President of CCUSA’s Disaster Operations. “In the last five years, the Disaster Response Operations staff has assisted Catholic Charities agencies in responding to more than 300 disaster events. Common to all disasters is the fact that persons living in poverty are disproportionately affected and least able to have adequate resources to prepare or recover.”

Additionally, while disasters can affect any community, regardless of wealth or political significance, they escalate the vulnerability of individuals and families already struggling to make ends meet, pushing more people further into economic despair.

Since Hurricane Katrina, CCUSA has helped tens of thousands of individuals recover from disasters – first as an early-responder to provide immediate needs and later helping people rebuild their lives. As a national network, CCUSA draws upon resources from across the country to help all people-regardless of background or religious beliefs-by providing help and hope with dignity and compassion.

It is thanks to the generosity of people from across the country that make our work possible. Please visit www.catholiccharitiesusa.org to find an agency near you or to learn how you can help.
