The Senior Manager, Major Gifts reports to the Senior Director, Development and Events and is responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major donors capable of making gifts of $5,000 and above. The position requires strategic thinking and donor management to develop a specific plan through which a potential donor can be moved from financial prospect to major gift. Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills are required including written, verbal, and personal contact with donors and prospective donors. The Senior Manager, Major Gifts will grow the donor database by identifying and developing major new donors. In addition, the Senior Manager, Major Gifts will develop a consistent, long-term, close relationship with donors – properly thanking each donor for his/her gifts and informing the donor of the organization’s activities and uses of the donor’s gifts.
Essential duties and responsibilities include the following:
- Work closely with the Senior Director, Development and Events and the Director of Leadership Gifts on strategic plan for in-house portfolio of Major Donors (2500 names).
- Manage a portfolio of 500-600 donors, with focus on 100-125 top tier donors, drawn from a mix of current donors of $5K or more, pipeline donors and new prospects who have been qualified by the Development Department.
- Engage in face-to-face solicitation of major gifts, and partner with senior and program staff and/or the Agency Relations department on donor engagement opportunities.
- Create individual goals for each person in the portfolio based on the donor’s history of giving and the organization’s knowledge of that donor’s potential.
- Create a plan for each donor/prospect in the portfolio and execute that plan to ensure individual donors are retained and upgraded.
- Identify key funding priorities and develop cases for support for individual donors and prospects.
- Oversee content for Annual Report, ensure all donors are listed accurately and appropriately and coordinate customized mailing to all major donors.
- Develop and execute cultivation and stewardship opportunities for donors and prospects in the portfolio and participate in donor-focused events and departmental fund-raising events.
- Track portfolio activity, actions and progress in the donor database.
- Create reports as needed for Chief Advancement Officer and Senior Director, Development and Events.
- Satisfy gift stewardship needs.
- In collaboration with Development Operations, manage acknowledgement process for major gift portfolio and review and edit all major donor acknowledgement letters.
- Assist with the development and production of communications tools, proposals and metric reports; provide support with scheduling and general correspondence.
- In conjunction with the Major Gifts team, identify key donors and prospects for Cardinal’s Residence donor breakfasts and annual Wall Street Breakfast and all stewardship events for donors who have supported Catholic Charities at the $5K+ giving level during the current fiscal year.
- Attend required meetings and events.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of the mission, goals, and priorities of the Catholic Charities and develop working relationships with program staff.
- Work with the Director of Institutional Support and Donor Relations and Senior Director Development and Events to create unrestricted and restricted proposals with Giving Opportunities.
- Other tasks and responsibilities depending on the specific needs of the department.
Position type and expected hours of work:
- This is a full-time position.
- Days and hours of work are generally 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday – Friday.
- Additional evening and weekend hours will be required, as well as travel.
- Hybrid work schedule with three days in office weekly.
Working conditions and physical demands required:

- Travel at least 25% of the time using public transportation or vehicle, traverse city streets, occasionally ascend/descend stairs, and be exposed to outside weather conditions.
- Remain stationary using a computer at least 30% of the time, in meetings and/or events.
