The face of Jesus

    Today’s lectionary readings

In most gospel accounts, Jesus is portrayed as a man who listens more than he speaks—a keen observer completely in tune with the people and circumstances surrounding him. He is quiet, contemplative, and steady, waiting for the perfect moment to deliver his cogent words of wisdom and slowly revealing his divinity through his encounters with others.

However, today in Luke’s gospel, we get a different version of Jesus. Like an eager child counting the days until Christmas, Jesus excitedly declares the depth of his love for his Father and his appreciation for the relationship they share as Father and Son. We can only wonder what the disciples were thinking as they witnessed their typically measured and subdued teacher caught up in the ecstasy of pure joy and thanksgiving!

That same energy that Jesus embodies in today’s gospel is contagious, especially for those of us involved with Catholic Charities. Our foundational belief in the dignity and sanctity of all people requires that we see the face of Jesus in everyone. This belief motivates us to express true hospitality and gratitude when people come through our doors searching for help and hope. Whether it is a smile at the reception desk, a cup of coffee in the waiting room, a listening ear on the other end of the phone, all of us, like the disciples in today’s gospel, are called to recognize the blessing of being “in the right place at the right time” for someone who needs the love and joy we have to offer because we have been chosen by God.

During this time of joyful anticipation let us be extra mindful of what we have seen and heard as followers of Jesus and be ready to share our abundant blessings with those we encounter and accompany in our daily ministry.
