Hope for miracles

    Today’s lectionary readings

“For nothing will be impossible for God.”

This verse reminds us so clearly that, with God’s providence, even the unthinkable can happen in our lives.

How many times do we, like King Ahaz, have very little faith? Even when someone gently assures us that everything will be ok, we still doubt. But when a miracle happens, all is transformed and renewed like a new beginning – a grace-filled moment from the one and only Son of God.

Today’s readings offer hope for miracles. Isaiah reminds us to ask God for a sign. The psalm invites us to welcome God with freely open arms to work in us: “Let the Lord enter; he is the king of glory.”

In the gospel, the angel’s peaceful annunciation to Mary – “Do not be afraid” – moves our hearts and affirms that God is always with us. And Mary’s total giving of her heart to God – “I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word” – encourages us to surrender ourselves to God in hope.

We’ve witnessed miracles of transformation in the lives of those our agencies serve. They surrender themselves as they step foot in our buildings, taking a leap of faith and trust that they will be protected and cared for. And we see them leave with renewed lives that bring them hope.

May we welcome Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus in the families we meet. May the announcement of His first coming into this world renew our commitment to serving Him. Because we know that “nothing will be impossible for God.”
