Friday of the First Week of Advent
As Advent progresses, today’s Psalm provides encouragement during challenge. Remember: Advent is a season of preparation. We anticipate the birth of our Savior and prepare to receive him in our hearts and our world.
Our world today is full of challenges, at every level. Numerous families and individuals struggle to stay afloat financially, always one unexpected crisis from eviction or foreclosure. People living in subsidized housing fear the loss of government subsidy that might lead to homelessness. Families seek ways to augment their food budgets and rely on the generosity of others, who now more than ever may struggle themselves. It is just a challenging time and, quite frankly, it can be hard to see the light at the end of this proverbial tunnel.
At a time like this, what are we to do? Prepare for the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
The psalmist reminds us of God’s great power when he says, “I believe that I shall see the bounty of the LORD in the land of the living.” That is a statement of faith. He goes further, encouraging us to “Wait for the LORD with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the LORD.” Don’t rely on elected officials to make everything better. Turn to Jesus, the light of the world, and trust that the Lord is our light and our salvation. Thanks to our donors, volunteers and staff, we are privileged to see the bounty of the Lord each time we respond to someone in need. Never forget the little miracles we are privileged to witness every day!
We know as followers of Jesus Christ that He is the way, the truth and the life. He comes to make things new. Let us turn to him in unity and share with him our struggles and concerns. He will ask us, as he does in today’s Gospel, “Do you believe that I can do this?” Our reply should be “Yes, Lord.”
