Renew our strength
“Fasting is therapy for the soul.” St. John Paul II
It is not uncommon to feel weak at this point in our Lenten journey. We are challenged to recognize and be aware that our weakness can cause desires that lead to temptation and sin.
As we approach the Fifth Sunday of Lent, we are reminded to call out to God to help us in our weakness, to slow down, and to move according to His plan rather than from human pressure or temptation — as we read about in today’s Gospel. Some who had gathered for the Jewish Feast of Tabernacles believed Jesus to be the Messiah, while others accused Him of deception. Jesus recognizes their weakness and reminds them that true understanding comes from seeking the will of God.
How do we slow down, and keep our weakness in check, in a world of overwhelming need and distraction both professionally and personally? We can listen without rushing to fix, choose presence over efficiency, and patience over judgement. This allows God to work, and us to respond to His will, not ours.
Today, let’s pause, slow down, and remember that fasting and almsgiving teaches us to let go of what distracts us from love. When we keep our focus on fasting and almsgiving we release what hardens our hearts and we become more open to God’s plan.
Let us pray:
Lord, help us today in our Lenten journey to slow down, and open our eyes to recognize Your presence in every person. Help us to know and accept Your will. Renew our strength and hope, and guide our hands and hearts to be instruments of Your mercy. Amen.
