JOB SUMMARY:  The Supervising Attorney provides legal advice and representation in accord with the best practice of the profession. The position supervises and provides mentorship to assigned staff and volunteers.

Supervisory Responsibility: Provides administrative supervision of 2-4 staff members.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Interview individuals seeking legal assistance and advise the client as to possible options through proper interpretation of current laws.
  • Provide ongoing legal representation to the client commencing with the initial intake interview, drafting of documents, correspondence and client applications/petitions.
  • Screen for need for navigator services. Refer individuals to Newcomer Network navigators as appropriate when additional resources or case management services are needed.
  • Conduct outreach activities in the community with respect to legal issues; Organize and run community workshops.
  • Serve as liaison between the program and community partners.
  • Supervise and provide mentorship to assigned staff and volunteers: Conduct performance evaluation and annual case review; assist in the implementation of program changes; communicate policies and procedures; and facilitate team dynamics.
  • Conduct weekly/bi-weekly case rounds with assigned staff.
  • Assist the Director in organizing and running ILS staff meetings.
  • Assess and refer cases to the Pro Bono Team, as appropriate, and provide mentorship to pro bono attorneys as needed.
  • Ensure timely submission of external and internal program reports. Assist the Director in grant writing as needed.

EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE:

  • Law Degree (J.D.).
  • Admission to the practice of law in any state and/or Washington, DC.
  • This position will require completion of Continuing Legal Education, in addition to all licensing requirements for the jurisdiction, where the attorney is licensed to practice.
  • Five (5) years’ experience in immigration law as an attorney.
  • Experience in supervising staff.
