Based on the parable of the Good Samaritan, the Super Neighbor program from Catholic Social Services Columbus connects volunteers with neighbors who are homebound or isolated. With an emphasis on the senior population, the Super Neighbor program offers companionship, home visits, or phone calls to be a reliable presence for someone who is alone or isolated.
The Super Neighbor Program is a volunteer-powered initiative where volunteers are trained, background checked, and supported so they can serve safely and effectively.
The program invites people to use their time, kindness, and dependability to strengthen relationships, reduce isolation, and build a culture of neighbors serving neighbors across parish partnerships
Challenge or Need
Aging can bring significant challenges, especially for seniors living with limited income, disability, chronic health conditions, mobility barriers, or limited social support. These challenges often make it difficult to access transportation, nutritious meals, medical appointments, home repairs, personal care, and other essential services. At the same time, most older adults want to remain in their own homes and communities. AARP’s 2024 Home and Community Preferences Survey found that 75% of adults age 50 and older want to stay in their current homes as they age, and 73% want to remain in their communities. The challenge is turning that preference into reality for low-income seniors. It requires strong local systems, but with families often living apart from one another, loneliness and isolation have become major health concerns for this population.
The U.S. Surgeon General has identified loneliness and social isolation as serious public health issues associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, dementia, stroke, depression, anxiety, and premature death; the health impact of social disconnection has been compared to smoking up to 15 cigarettes per day.
Providing this population with companionship improves health, safety, independence, and social connection, as well as, potentially, access to services for low-income, vulnerable seniors.

Why It’s Innovative
The Super Neighbor program is designed to empower individuals aged 18 and older to become Super Neighbors. Participants receive the tools and opportunities to make a significant impact in their communities by visiting isolated seniors who need meaningful connections, helping them feel engaged with their community.
Our program emphasizes the importance of family involvement by encouraging families to volunteer together. This approach allows students to work alongside their parents or guardians, promoting collaboration and shared responsibility. Additionally, we offer high school seniors the unique opportunity to earn valuable internship hours while actively contributing to their communities, helping them prepare for future careers.
To strengthen community ties and enhance the overall experience, we hold quarterly Super Neighbor volunteer meetings. These gatherings serve as a platform for volunteers to connect, share experiences, and inspire one another. Furthermore, we are dedicated to supporting Super Neighbor host sites through monthly Zoom calls. These meetings provide a space for host sites to share their success stories, discuss best practices, and collaboratively address any challenges they may encounter in their programs. This ongoing support ensures that we work together effectively to foster positive change within our communities.
In Mark 12:31, Jesus declared this the second greatest commandment: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”
Program Impact
Since the launch of the Super Neighbor program earlier this year, we have successfully partnered with four parishes and collaborated with the Diocese of Louisville through our Super Neighbor parish engagement initiative. This partnership has enabled us to make significant progress in supporting the community.
As a result of our efforts, we have matched 20 dedicated Super Neighbors with 40 clients who had previously felt isolated from their communities. These connections have not only helped individuals feel more integrated and supported, but they have also fostered a stronger sense of belonging.
The Super Neighbors have played a crucial role in promoting the needs of the clients they visit. Whether a client needs general home repair, transportation, or food, we have been able to match the resources to the need.
Through in-service workshops, the Super Neighbors have learned effective communication skills and how to better support seniors in avoiding falls and recognizing scam scenarios. This holistic approach not only enhances individual well-being but also strengthens community ties and improves the overall quality of life for everyone involved.
Lessons Learned
The most significant lesson we learned during program implementation concerns our initial approach to recruiting and orienting volunteers for the Super Neighbor role. Initially, we organized two separate information sessions at various parishes, after which we planned to conduct a more in-depth orientation for prospective volunteers. However, we quickly discovered that this multi-step process was overwhelming for many potential volunteers. As a result, a considerable number became disengaged and lost interest before even attending the orientation.
To address this issue effectively, we decided to streamline our approach. We now hold a single, engaging information session that serves multiple purposes: it provides potential volunteers with the essential details about the Super Neighbor role while also offering a clearer understanding of the program’s goals and expectations. Immediately following this session, we conduct an orientation for those who express interest in becoming Super Neighbors.
This new format has proven to be highly effective; it not only accelerates the onboarding process but also creates a more enjoyable and engaging experience for our volunteers. By simplifying the steps required for participation, we have fostered greater enthusiasm and commitment among those who choose to take on the Super Neighbor role.
