Homeless to Housewarmed

October 8, 2026

The Homeless to Housewarmed Campaign from Catholic Charities of Acadiana is a heartwarming initiative helping our neighbors who have experienced homelessness transition into safe, stable housing in a dignified way.

By joining this campaign, a volunteer team has the opportunity to create a sacred space that will be filled with a love that is unique to your group.

Prior to a client’s move-in date, the volunteer team gathers all basic items to turn a bare living space into a welcoming home. When a housing unit becomes available, the team will be deployed to transform the space, offering a fresh start, warmth, and hope to someone who needs it most.

Challenge or Need

Most often, when a client moves from our emergency homeless shelter into a housing unit, they are coming with the clothes on their back, a small bag of personal belongings, and few to no resources to establish themselves in a home.

We have found that providing a housing unit is only a small piece of the puzzle for an individual’s long-term stability.

Our goal is that creating a sacred space through the warmth of new home will provide dignity, a fresh start, and hope for long-term stability.

Why It’s Innovative

Homeless to Housewarmed reimagines what it means to end homelessness by recognizing that housing alone is not enough. While many programs focus on securing an apartment, this initiative transforms an empty unit into a fully furnished, welcoming home before the client walks through the door for the first time.

The innovation lies in shifting this work from an internal staff responsibility to a community ministry. Rather than relying on limited staff capacity to prepare living spaces, churches, businesses, civic organizations, and volunteers are invited to take ownership of the process. These teams furnish, decorate, and personalize each home based on the client’s needs and preferences, creating a space that communicates dignity, belonging, and hope.

This approach also transforms the volunteer experience. Participants are not simply donating furniture or writing a check. They become active partners in a client’s transition from chronic homelessness to permanent housing. Preparing a home becomes an act of hospitality and accompaniment, allowing the faithful to tangibly live out the Gospel call to welcome the stranger and uphold the dignity of every person.

By addressing both a practical operational challenge and a deeper human need, Homeless to Housewarmed creates a scalable model that strengthens community engagement while helping clients begin their next chapter in a home that is truly ready to be lived in.

Program Impact

Since launching in June 2024, Homeless to Housewarmed has mobilized more than 50 volunteer groups to prepare permanent homes for over 50 individuals transitioning from street-level homelessness into stable housing.

The initiative has attracted an incredibly diverse cross-section of the community, including parish ministries, businesses, civic organizations, families, and informal groups of friends. Each team collects furnishings, prepares the home, and transforms an empty apartment into a welcoming, fully equipped living space before the client arrives.

Beyond the direct impact on clients, the initiative has expanded Catholic Charities of Acadiana’s volunteer and donor pipeline. Homeless to Housewarmed provides a deeply personal, hands-on experience for participants, many of whom had never previously engaged with our mission. By inviting community members into the transformational process of helping someone begin again, we have established meaningful new relationships that have led to continued volunteer service, financial support, and long-term advocacy for our work.

The program has also increased organizational capacity by shifting home preparation from staff to trained volunteer teams. This allows staff to focus on housing navigation, case management, and client support while ensuring every client enters a thoughtfully prepared home that reflects dignity, stability, and hope.

The result is a scalable model that strengthens community ownership of the mission while helping individuals move from homelessness not just into housing, but into a home.

Lessons Learned

One of our greatest lessons has been that ending homelessness is not only about providing housing. It is also about restoring dignity and creating a sense of belonging. An empty apartment may meet a basic need, but a thoughtfully prepared home communicates to a client that they are valued, welcomed, and worthy of a fresh start.

We have also learned that volunteers are looking for meaningful, transformational opportunities to serve. By inviting parish groups, businesses, families, and civic organizations into the process of preparing a home, we have created an experience that is deeply personal and rooted in the Corporal Works of Mercy. Many participants who first engaged through Homeless to Housewarmed have gone on to volunteer in other ministries, become donors, or advocate for our mission.

Operationally, empowering volunteers to furnish and prepare homes has significantly expanded our capacity. Instead of relying on limited staff resources, we have built a scalable model that allows case managers and housing staff to focus on helping clients achieve long-term stability while volunteers provide the final, welcoming touch.

Perhaps the most important lesson is that this model is highly adaptable. Any Catholic Charities agency helping clients transition into permanent housing can mobilize its own faith communities and local partners to transform empty housing into homes. The result is stronger community engagement, greater organizational capacity, and a more dignified beginning for those rebuilding their lives.
