Dios de toda la creación, tu bondad y tu gloria brillan a través de todo lo que has hecho. A la luz de la fe, ayúdanos a ver este mundo, nuestra casa común, no como un recurso para dominar y explotar, sino como un don que debe ser apreciado por todas las generaciones. Impulsados por tu Espíritu, te lo pedimos en el nombre de Jesús, por quien fue hecha toda la creación. Amén.

Psalm 104:24-31

R: The earth is full of your creatures, O Lord!

¡Cuán variadas son tus obras, Yahveh! Con sabiduría las has hecho todas; la tierra está llena de tus criaturas. R.

¡Ahí está el mar, grande y ancho! En él pululan innumerables seres vivos, grandes y pequeños. Allí navegan los barcos y Leviatán, a quien formaste para que jugara contigo. R.

Todos ellos esperan que les des alimento a su debido tiempo. Cuando se lo das, se reúnen; cuando abres la mano, se sacian. Cuando ocultas tu rostro, se asustan. R.

Quítales el aliento, perecerán y volverán al polvo. Envía tu espíritu, son creados y renuevas la faz de la tierra. R.

Que la gloria de Yahveh perdure para siempre; que Yahveh se alegre en sus obras. R.

Mateo 6:25-33

(Jesús dijo): "Por eso os digo que no os preocupéis por vuestra vida, por lo que comeréis [o beberéis], ni por vuestro cuerpo, por lo que os vestiréis. ¿No es la vida más que el alimento y el cuerpo más que el vestido? Mirad las aves del cielo; no siembran ni cosechan, no recogen nada en graneros, y sin embargo vuestro Padre celestial las alimenta. ¿No sois vosotros más importantes que ellas? ¿Puede alguno de vosotros, preocupándose, añadir un solo momento a su esperanza de vida? ¿Por qué os preocupáis por la ropa? Aprended de la forma en que crecen las flores silvestres. No trabajan ni hilan. Pero os digo que ni siquiera Salomón en todo su esplendor se vistió como una de ellas. Si Dios viste así a la hierba del campo, que hoy crece y mañana se echa al horno, ¿no hará mucho más por vosotros, hombres de poca fe? Así que no os preocupéis y digáis: "¿Qué vamos a comer?" o "¿Qué vamos a beber?" o "¿Qué vamos a vestir?". Todas estas cosas las buscan los paganos. Vuestro Padre celestial sabe que las necesitáis todas. Pero buscad primero el Reino [de Dios] y su justicia, y todas estas cosas se os darán por añadidura.

Trusting that God embraces with tenderness everything that exists, let us lift up our prayers for this world, our common home, saying:

R: We praise you, God of all creation.

Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. R.

Fill us with peace that we may live as sisters and brothers, harming no one. R.

Help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. R.

Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. R.

Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor of the earth. R.

Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, and be filled with awe and contemplation. R.

Enlighten us to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey toward your infinite light. R.

God of beauty and God of truth, everything in your creation is connected, for all share a common origin in your creating hand. Fill us with a spirit of praise, gratitude, wisdom, and courage, that we might care for creation and not misuse it, ensure that its goods are shared in justice with all our brothers and sisters, and speak out on its behalf whenever it is threatened. Amen.

From Pope Francis’ Encyclical Letter Laudato Si’ – On Care For Our Common Home

A sense of deep communion with the rest of nature cannot be real if our hearts lack tenderness, compassion and concern for our fellow human beings. It is clearly inconsistent to combat trafficking in endangered species while remaining completely indifferent to human trafficking, unconcerned about the poor, or undertaking to destroy another human being deemed unwanted. This compromises the very meaning of our struggle for the sake of the environment. It is no coincidence that, in the canticle in which Saint Francis praises God for his creatures, he goes on to say: “Praised be you, my Lord, through those who give pardon to your love.” Everything is connected. Concern for the environment thus needs to be joined to a sincere love for our fellow human beings and an unwavering commitment to resolving the problems of society. (No. 91)
