Catholic Charities USA President and CEO Sister Donna Markham OP, PhD, addressed attendees at the CCUSA 2022 Annual Gathering, drawing on the text of Matthew 25 to frame her talk. “Little did I know, back in 2015, when I accepted the call to become president of Catholic Charities USA, that God would find it in God’s infinite wisdom to immerse me in an eight-year journey into Matthew 25,” she said. The Gospel’s call to feed the hungry, clothe the naked, etc., should be the “yard stick” by which we measure our work, Sr. Donna said. “That’s become one of the significant pathways to encounter that God has placed before me,” she said, “a chance to glimpse the face of the suffering Christ.” She praised the work of local agencies in meeting the challenges of natural disasters, manmade water crises, a lack of affordable housing and record numbers of migrants at the southern border and in major cities in the interior. “This is God’s work,” she said. “What you’re doing is a prayer every day.”
