Editor’s column Vol 48 No 4

In preparing this issue, I had the privilege to speak with many of our contributors, those featured in the videos and those who wrote articles. Already busy with their daily responsibilities at the Catholic Charities agencies where they work, they were happy to share how their agencies met the challenges of the pandemic in terms of helping people find meaningful employment.

Part of the mission of Catholic Charities is to help people in need, and there was no shortage of need as the spread of COVID-19 forced the closures of businesses and other organizations. People who were already suffering with limited resources were hit especially hard. Catholic Charities agencies adapted well and continued providing services throughout the pandemic, and that’s what anyone would expect from the social service professionals that staff the agencies.

What may be unexpected, given the context of the pandemic and the situations of the clients, is the palpable sense of joy and accomplishment that both staff and clients project in the articles and videos of this issue. You will see Catholic Charities staff express delight in helping clients get jobs, and you will see clients happy and grateful to have one. It’s good to know that even pandemic conditions cannot stop the work of charity.
