The 2008 Election: Help make poverty a priority

The Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America works to foster leadership, build partnerships, and demand accountability so we can cut poverty in half and make our nation whole.

The official guide for the Catholic Church about elections is the document created by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship.

While the common good embraces all, those who are weak, vulnerable, and most in need deserve preferential concern. A basic moral test for our society is how we treat the most vulnerable in our midst. In a society marred by deepening disparities between rich and poor, Scripture gives us the story of the Last Judgment and reminds us that we will be judges by our response to the "least among us". What Our Elected Officials Must Do

Our elected officials must work to meet the needs of the most vulnerable in our nation by supporting programs that provide urgently needed health care, affordable housing, nutrition, and other assistance to low-income families and children, the elderly, and the disabled.
